‘Vandalization of Facilities among Challenges to MDGs’

Millennium Development Goals Focal person in Sokoto State, Buhari Umar, has said that vandalization of facilities provided for communities is one of the fundamental challenges to implementation of MDGs projects.
Umar, who said this in a chat with Daily Trust in Sokoto, stressed the need for communities to always ensure that they guard such facilities. He said other challenges include difficult terrain and flooding disaster, but added that measures have been taken to address the challenges such as supporting contractors to pass through Niger Republic to reach some of the communities.

He added that the state project support unit in collaboration with state implementation committee was able to address some of the challenges using savings made through competitive contracts.
On the achievement of the MDGs programme in the state, the Focal Person said in 2008, they intervened in 92 community health centres, adding “there was near absence of health centres because of the nature of dilapidation, but with the MDGs intervention, in collaboration with the state and federal government, we were able to restore them”.
He added that about 69 solar powered boreholes were also drilled across 69 communities in the 23 local government areas of the state.
