The Peoples Democratic Party’s request that President Goodluck Jonathan be applauded for delivering on his campaign promises has provoked angry reactions from some Nigerians.
The PDP said on its Facebook page on Saturday that the President deserved praises from Nigerians for leaving a “legacy of credible elections” since the beginning of his tenure.
The ruling party argued that Jonathan had taken a significant step forward by fulfilling his pledge to leave behind a legacy of credible elections across the country.
It said that this single achievement, which has drastically reduced post-election litigations in the country, was enough reason for the people to shower applause on the President.
The party noted, “Lest we forget, the first promise made by President Goodluck Jonathan when he succeeded the late President Umar Yar’Adua was to leave a legacy of credible elections. He has fulfilled this.
“The 2011 general election in which he participated as an incumbent was adjudged, locally and internationally, the most credible in the nation’s recent history. As a result, the usual post-election litigations dropped by half.
“The President has since repeated this feat in subsequent governorship elections in Adamawa, Sokoto, Kebi, Cross River and Bayelsa states. Does our President not deserve a loud ovation?”
But Nigerians who read the post on Facebook and Twitter expressed displeasure with the argument of the self-acclaimed largest political party in Africa, saying the PDP’s judgement of the current situation in the country was far from being objective.
The respondents argued that though Jonathan might have succeeded in ensuring that credible elections were conducted in parts of the country, he has done little to check the endemic corruption threatening its survival as an entity.
Writing on the PDP’s Facebook wall, one Ginny Smart said it was high time the party stopped basking in the protective warmth of the ‘one man, one vote’ slogan.
“Nothing is moving in the right direction. There is no electricity, no potable water, no good roads and unemployment has reached the highest level so far. Besides, university teachers have been on strike for over four months and some people are praising the Jonathan government. May God help us all,” one Adegbite Olugbenga wrote on the party’s Facebook wall.
“We are jumping up and down. Do you think that is all we need or Nigerians don’t deserve more? For goodness’ sake, our road networks, power and education system are still in comatose. We deserve improvement in these sectors,” he said.
Also Emmanuel Mishael challenged the party to produce evidence that the Jonathan was championing the fight against corruption and delivering on promises in other critical sectors of the economy.
“What has he (Jonathan) done about corruption? What is he doing with the aviation minister (Stella Oduah) who lavished tax payers’ money on luxury car collections? Mishael argued.
