The teenage girl killed on her way to school was stabbed once without warning before her assailant “calmly” got off the bus, police disclosed.
Christina Edkins, 16, was murdered in an apparently random attack that lasted
“just one or two seconds”.
The 22-year-old suspect managed to get off the bus without attracting
attention before spending several hours travelling around Birmingham and the
West Midlands on various buses. He then returned to the scene of the crime,
where he was apprehended after a brief chase. Last night he was sectioned
under the Mental Health Act.
A teenage schoolboy who was sitting at the back of the bus on the top deck was
the only witness to the attack in Birmingham city centre on Thursday
morning, police said.
Stephanie Bent, a passenger who was sitting downstairs, described her frantic
efforts to save the schoolgirl’s life seconds after seeing the suspect
disembark.
She wrote on Facebook: “Thankfully he got off and I was able to go upstairs
and help the girl as best I could. I gave CPR until medics arrived and am
deeply traumatised I could not save her.
