The National Coordinator of Oodua People’s Congress, Chief Gani Adams, has raised the alarm that Nigerians are losing their identities.
Adams, who also acts as the Chief Promoter of Olokun Festival Foundation, mentioned this during the 2013 edition of Olokun festival in Lagos State
He made the following statement during his address:
“We are gradually losing all the things that give us our identities as Nigerians”
"Our children can no longer speak our languages at home, eat Nigerian foods or wear Nigerian clothes.”
The OPC Chief also added that according to the research results, there is a tremendous growth in the interest of Chinese language across the world and attributed it to the determination of the Chinese people to promote their language and culture.
“In Nigeria, it is a taboo for our children to speak our local languages. It has even become a thing of pride for us, when our children cannot speak our local languages.
“Our languages, cultures and traditions are our heritage from God. It is time we went back to the basics and begin to make use of these God - given talents and gifts .”
Eminent Nigerians, who were honoured on the occasion, included the governors of Lagos and Osun states, Messrs Babatunde Fashola and Rauf Aregbesola as well as the Ooni of Ife, Oba Okunade Sijuwade and the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi.
The guest speaker on the occasion, Dr Dele Orimogunje of the Department of African and Asian Studies, University of Lagos, stated that the Yoruba society is endowed with a lot of attributes that could aid development.
