A group of concerned youths, the Niger Delta Youth Movement, yesterday criticized the latest decision by governors of Kwara, Sokoto, Adamawa, Kano and Rivers states to defect from the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
According to the group, the defected governors "shunned appeals from well-meaning Nigerians to reconcile their differences with the leadership of the PDP".
The governors "betrayed the party that brought them to prominence," the group's representative - its National President, Prince Ajulin Akumagba, - said. Speaking with journalists in Abuja, he added that the lawmakers "took a wrong step to have dumped the party that brought them to limelight."
The organisation also urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to declare the seats of the five defected governors vacant, adding that the Alhaji Kawu Baraje-led faction misled the group to forsake PDP "out of their selfish interest."
Mr. Akumagba also praised the leadership of the PDP, Alhaji Bamanga Tukur and President Goodluck Jonathan, for staying focused while the turbulence lasted.
