Half  of male football fans admit putting their love of the sport above spending time with their wives.STUDY: Football Fans Would Rather Watch Game Than Have Sex With Their Wives
Asked to choose the biggest source of joy in their life, one in seven supporters admitted the game brought them more pleasure than their marriage, while a sixth couldn’t choose either way”.
And such is the devotion to football that one in four men has passed up sex in order to watch a match.
The true extent to which passion for the game affects relationships was revealed by a study of 1,000 football fans and 1,000 wives.
The research, from bookmakers Coral, showed 10% even claimed to love football more than they loved their wives.
Many fans admit to telling lies to be able to watch games, or rushing through meals and family events to get back for Match Of The Day.
The study found 51% of wives claimed to be “football widows”, losing their husbands completely to the sport at times.
Results also showed that nearly two-thirds of fans will “drop everything” when a match is on.
A spokesman for Coral said: “For many fans, supporting their team is a lifelong commitment.
“The devotion to the game is something that rarely dwindles, and the results of the study show even a commitment like marriage isn’t likely to stop that passion.
Of course it’s important to always love and respect a partner, but don’t expect too much from a fan during that crucial 90 minutes each week.”
