Rivers State - Six militia men arrested by the Joint Task Force in Rivers State on January 3, 2014, have been released on the orders of Nigeria's First Lady, Patience Jonathan, according to SaharaReporters.
It will be recalled that the six men in an white Land Rover jeep were stopped on Ekporo Road while heading to Ogu Bolo Local Government Area for "suspicious movement". Among those arrested were Daniel Ibito-Anga, Sunday Elisha, Uche Jenikachi, Ibinabo Lawson, and Okechukwu Okoro. They possessed AK47 rifles, 146 rounds of 7.62mm Special live ammunition and 10 magazines.
Ibito-Anga is known in Ogu Bolo as Security Adviser/PA to Senator George Sekibo (Rivers East Senatorial District) and Evans Bipi, who, in their turn, are close associates of Patience Jonathan. Bipi is the legislator who was recently stopped by a court from parading himself as the Speaker of the Assembly.
Their release was first ordered by Mrs. Patience on January 6, but at that time Rivers State Police Commissioner, Joseph Mbu (redeployed on Thursday to Abuja) could not comply, as the order became public knowledge.
Despite holding the men, Commissioner Mbu did not charge them to court. Other security agencies say Mr. Mbu kept telling them that investigations were still going on - only to find out that the susects were released on Wednesday.
Rivers State Police command are yet to comment on the matter.
