NUJ threatens media organisations over unpaid salaries

The Nigerian Union of Journalist (NUJ) has issued a two-week ultimatum to media organisations owing salaries and allowances to their employees to settle such obligations or risk unpleasant industrial actions.
Malam Mohammed Garba, the President of the union, issued the ultimatum while addressing aviation correspondents in Lagos on Tuesday.

The briefing was held  at the Air Transport Services Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (ATSSSAN) Secretariat, Murtala Muhammed Airport, Lagos.
It was attended by Mr Deji Elumoye, the Lagos State Chairman of NUJ, some national and state executive members of the NUJ.
Garba decried “media owners owing journalists several months of unpaid salaries” and gave them a two-week ultimatum to pay or face picketing.
“We are worried that major newspaper owners making several millions of naira as profit owe their employees several months of unpaid salaries.
“How do we talk of sanitising the industry and the profession when some media organisations are aiding corruption by that act,” he said.
According to him, the NUJ has also alerted members of the Radio and Television Workers Union (RATTAWU) and the National Union of Printing and Publishing Workers (NUPPROW).
“This is to ensure that the proposed picketing after the expiration of the two-week ultimatum is effective.
