Nine out of over 7,946 graduating students of the University of Jos bagged first class honours and 613 students emerged with second class upper division, as the school marks its 26th convocation ceremony on Saturday.
In addition three people, including the renowned jurist, Chief Afe Babalola, will be conferred with honorary doctorate degrees. The two others were one time Super Permanent Secretary, Alhaji Ahmed Joda and Mr. Bitrus Pam.
Vice chancellor of the University, Prof. Hayward Mafuyai, who disclosed this at a pre-convocation press briefing in Jos on Tuesday, said that Babalola will be conferred with doctorate in Law while Joda and Kim would be awarded Doctorate of Letters and Humanities respectively.
According to him, out of the nine first class graduates, five were from the department of pharmacy , which has been adjudged as the best in the country by the National Universities Commission and one of the best by the Pharmacy Council of Nigeria.
He said that 5,709 will be graduating with first degrees, 492 Masters, and 50 are being awarded Doctorate degrees and 67 postgraduate diplomas. 1,598 are awarded with Diplomas and 31 would receive certificates,
The vice chancellor said that those awarded honorary degrees were carefully and painstakingly chosen because of their contributions to the society. Babalola, he said, has contributed immensely to the development of law and is also being recognized for his exemplary contributions towards the development of education through the Afe Babalola University, Ado-Ekiti.
He said that the university has recorded tremendous achievements in its quest to relocate to the permanent campus while for the first time, graduating students will be able to have their signed certificates at the convocation ground.
