Three Nigerian journalists are facing criminal charges for a report alleging a plan by President Goodluck Jonathan to undermine opposition parties.
Tony Amokeodo and Chibuzor Ukaibe, journalists working for Abuja-based Leadership, were arrested by the police yesterday and charged in court today with 10 counts including forgery and publishing falsehoods, according to court documents e-mailed by the newspaper. A third journalist, Taiwo Ogunmola Omilani, who wasn’t in court, was charged along with them.
Their April 3 story also alleged the government planned to cut fuel subsidies. The newspaper said it stands by the story.
The police detained four journalists from the newspaper over the story on April 8 and later released them. Hearings in the case will resume on April 23, according to Azubuike Ishiekwene, managing director of the newspaper
