The complainant, who identified herself only as Mrs. Bassey, told the court she met Oyelola after being directed to him by the management of the school.
She said, “I gave him N180, 000 for the rent of the school hall although the price was N280,000 because I was told that the school gives out the hall at that amount to ex-students. And since my sister is an ex-student, I went through her.
“But, all Mr. Oyelola did was to give us an undertaken, and said he would give us the receipt a day after.”
Oyelola was said to have collected money for a couple’s wedding reception, but on the wedding day, the reception hall was occupied for another programme, and the newly-weds with their guests were turned back.
The defendant admitted collecting the N180,000 from Bassey, and said he would refund it.
When the magistrate asked him where Bassey’s money was, Oyelola said, “I promise to pay back the money in bits.”
Oyelola was arraigned on one count of stealing, which he pleaded not guilty.
