Lagos - Speaking at a tribute event for the late Nelson Mandela, Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi named the reason for politicians' stealing: office holders steal funds because citizens never confront them (including himself).
Mr. Amaechi quoted Nelson Mandela's words about Nigeri:
“There is a level of poverty in Nigeria that should be unacceptable. I cannot understand why Nigerians are not more angry than they are.
"What about the corruption and the crimes? Your elections are like wars. Now we hear that you cannot be president in Nigeria unless you are Muslim or Christian. Some people tell me your country may break up. Please, don't let it happen."
"You are wondering why I am bringing this," the Governor said and immediately asked, to laughter and applause, "If you see a thief, what do you do?
"Few individuals are going with your money, and you don't notice.
"You have stoned nobody, that’s why we are stealing.
"It's good [for us] to steal if you [Nigerians] can't fight back."
