David Luiz believes a top-four finish and winning the Europa League will make it a successful season for Chelsea.
The Blues have had an inconsistent season, during which Roberto Di Matteo was sacked as manager and replaced by Rafa Benitez in an interim capacity.
On Sunday they saw their defence of the FA Cup end courtesy of a 2-1 semi-final defeat by Manchester City at Wembley, while earlier in the campaign they became the first holders to exit the Champions League at the group stages.
However, Luiz said: "If you win the Europa League and stay to play Champions League next year of course it's a success.
"Some big teams in Europe don't win titles this year, so of course it's a success."
Chelsea are currently fourth in the Premier League, level on points with fifth-placed Tottenham but with a game in hand on their London rivals.
On Wednesday, the Blues face Fulham and victory would see them strengthen their claim to a top-four spot with four games to play, one of which is against Spurs.
Luiz admits that this season has been a disappointment so far but he is hopeful the future has better things in store for the club.
"We have a difficult competition," added Luiz. "This season we want to win everything. Now we cannot win the league, but we can stay in the best position and we can win another European title. Work for that.
"The next season is the next season. The future."
