2013 was not a banner year for LG’s smartphone business. After gaining some ground in the highly competitive market, sales of LG’s flagship G2 smartphone last year completely bombed. A report suggested the company sold just 2.3 million G2 handsets total through early December after forecasting sales totaling 3 million units in Q3 alone, and it left industry watchers wondering if there is any hope left for LG’s smartphone business. Well, we may soon find out.
A report from Korean-language Naver claims that LG is preparing to launch its next-generation LG G3 flagship phone in mid-May this year, possibly on May 17th in Korea. That timing could be absolutely devastating, however, with Samsung’s next-generation flagship smartphone, the Galaxy S5, likely scheduled to be announced in March and released in April.
LG will still look to finally make a dent in Samsung’s armor with the G3, which Naver claims will feature a display with 2K resolution (1,440 x 2,560 pixels) that measures 5.5 inches diagonally. Earlier rumors also suggested it will include a 16-megapixel camera and a quad- or eight-core LG Odin processor.
Let’s hope it brings more innovation to the table this time around than power and volume buttons that have been moved to the back of the device.
