Monaco Sign Echiejile

Super Eagles defender, Elderson Echiejile, has completed his move to French Ligue 1 side, AS Monaco, from Sporting Braga.
The left-back on Friday afternoon signed a four and half year deal which effectively ties him down at Monaco till 2018. Echiejile returns to a familiar terrain (Ligue 1) where he previously starred for Rennes in 2007.
Though the transfer fee for Echiejile was not disclosed, it is believed to be in the region of 1.5m Euros. Speaking with his new club’s official website after signing, Echiejile said he was excited to join Monaco; a team where African greats like George Weah and Victor Ikpeba once played.
“I am very happy and proud to return to France to a club like AS Monaco FC which is one of the best in Europe. “They have a great reputation in Africa since George Weah played here,” the Super Eagles defender told Monaco’s official site.
“I’ll give the best of myself to succeed with them as best as possible.” The left-back, whose contract with Braga was due to end in June, played every match for Nigeria as they won the Africa Cup of Nations in South Africa last year.
He is touted as one of the World Cup bound players. A product of the Pepsi Academy, the former U-20 star has been in Portugal since the 2010/11 season.
In all, he played 73 league matches and helped them into the final of the 2010/11 Europa League and second place in the league in the 2010/11 season. He has also played 33 times for the Eagles scoring two goals.
