Why is drug addiction bad? It can kill you. It can ruin your life, emotionally, physically, financially. It can destroy relationships. It can kill other people. Sound a bit melodramatic? It isn’t. Unfortunately, all are true and correct answers to the question “why is drug addiction bad?”
Make sure you are understanding the difference. Drug addiction is bad, drug addicts are not. They do things that are bad because of the drugs. This is why it is imperative to get them help. This is why it is so important to educate children on the dangers of drugs and alcohol.
Some people can have a couple of drinks and not become alcoholics. Others, whether due to being genetically prone to alcoholism or simply having a little bad luck or being irresponsible with their drinking, can find themselves becoming addicted.
Drugs and alcohol can be requested by the brain in a series of mixed messages. When they hit the bloodstream they go right to the brain, which then says, “oh, I like this feeling” and wants it again, and again, and again,, sending messages that confuse the person.
People get dependent on the drugs or alcohol and this can harm them physically. Cancer, cirrhosis, heart, kidney and circulatory problems; all can be caused by drug or alcohol addiction. Sometimes an overdose or alcohol poisoning can lead to an accidental death. Sometimes a person is so out of it, he or she may even intentionally overdose.
Drugs and alcohol can cause mental problems, too. This is part of why it is important when a person seeks help that a physical and psychological screening is done because many times this causes the need for a dual diagnosis. Sometimes mental problems lead to addiction and vice versa. Someone who seemed to be perfectly sane in high school or college? Run into them a couple of years after they get into drugs and you see a different person because it has so changed them mentally.
Drug and alcohol addiction can ruin a person financially. Drugs are not cheap. Alcohol is not cheap, either. They run up hundreds of dollars a month at the liquor store or spend thousands on hard core illicit drugs. It happens all the time.
Then there is the fact that it can destroy relationships and families. People get divorced, children grow up scared in their own homes. A spouse wonders what type of day it will be. A parent wonders if their child will be alive when the sun sets.
Why is drug addiction bad? Ask anyone who has ever loved an addict. You will definitely get some hardcore answers.
