President Goodluck Jonathan on Saturday paid a discreet and surprise visit to Lagos State, where he held meetings with some key groups and personalities. The meetings lasted for about seven hours, SUNDAY PUNCH learnt.
Security operatives at the Murtala Muhammed Internationa Airport, Lagos, said Jonathan arrived at the President Wing of the airport in company with his aides around 11am.
According to impeccable sources at the airport, the President, who was dressed in black Niger Delta attire with a black hat, was conveyed from the airport with a chopper to the Dodan Barracks, Ikoyi, from where he was later driven in a convoy of cars to the State House, Marina.
It was gathered that Jonathan was on his way from Ivory Coast when he stopped by in Lagos.
At the State House, the President was said to have held series of separate meetings with different groups.
Although the purpose of the meeting could not be ascertained as of press time, sources close to the President said the meetings had to do with the 2015 presidential election.
“I think the President may declare his 2015 ambition to seek re-election any time soon, going by the series of meetings that were held today,” an unconfirmed source close the meetings said.
The President later departed for Abuja through the same President Wing of the MMIA at about 8:20pm.
Security sources at the scene said Jonathan could not be brought back to the Presidential Wing with the chopper because it was already dark and the chopper could not be flown in the night.
As a result, the President, it was learnt, was driven back from the State House to the airport where he boarded the Air Force One Presidential Jet to Abuja.
