Former Aston Villa football player Thomas Hiztlsperger has become the first German professional to confirm that he is gay.
Hiztlsperger, who hung up his boots from professional football 4 months ago, told Die Zeit that he wants “to bring forward the discussion about homosexuality among professionals.”
Commenting on his disclosure, he explained that he felt it was the right time to open up, after he had retired from the game.
However, the former player confessed that it had been a “long and difficult process” when it dawned to him that he was homosexual.
“Only in the last couple of years have I come to realise that I would prefer to live with a man,” he said. “I have never felt ashamed for what I am.”
