The National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Alhaji Bamanga Tukur, said he was not aware of any member of his party, who had defected to another party.
Tukur stated this on December 4, 2013, Wednesday, while briefing the journalists after a closed-door meeting between the PDP Senate Caucus and Central Working Committee of the party. The mentioned event was boycotted by the aggrieved members in the Senate.
The list of those absent at the meeting included Senators Bukola Saraki, Shaaba Lafiaji, Wilson Ake, Danjuma Goje, Ali Ndume, Adamu Abdullahi, Magnus Abe, Hassan Barata, Jubrin Bindo, Aishat Al-Hassan, among others.
However, Tukur said the four-hour-long meeting was silent on the issue of defection because it was a family talk to review the activities of the party.
“We did not talk about people who want to go or stay (defection) I came here because this is the first time I am coming to meet my family, they are my members,” the National PDP Chairman said.
He also noted that the need for the entrenchment of democracy, discipline and good governance formed the basis of his message to the senators during the meeting.
Asked whether it was an earlier visit to the National Assembly by the Kawu Baraje’s faction of the party that informed his decision to meet the senators, Tukur said, “Of course not, this is PDP and there is no other PDP”.
Also asked whether he discussed the impact of the defection of the five governors with the senators, Tukur said, “Have they defected? They have not gone yet.”
Tukur also acknowledged the challenges facing the party but assured the lawmakers that the problem was surmountable “because PDP is one family working together towards achieving a common goal.”
Senate President David Mark, who led the Senators to the meeting, admitted that the party was facing some challenges but assured the party members that the party was capable of addressing the issues like a family matter.
