The Governor of Niger State, Dr. Mu’azu Babangida Aliyu has attributed the strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), which entered its sixth month, to massive stealing of public funds by politicians and civil servants.
Gov. Babangida stated if people at the helm of affairs stole less from the public treasury, there would be enough money to make education free in the country.
Gov. Babangida, made this statement at the first convention and election of Bayero University Kano Alumni Association (BUKAA) executives in Kano, on December 7, 2013, Saturday.
“There is no country that stealing is not taking place. But if we steal less, we will be able to provide free education to our teeming populace, from nursery to higher institution level.“But we allowed things to deteriorate to a situation where we don’t actually know how much money is coming into the country, as what is being declared is not the actual amount. That is why we have a problem that our lecturers have to be on strike for more than five months,” the Governor of Niger State said.
Gov. Babangida lamented that in the whole world, it is only in Nigeria that academic activities are disrupted because of strike by university lecturers.
He urged alumni of Nigerian universities to help their alma maters by establishing special endowment funds, which would to enable the universities have enough money to pay staff salaries and allowances to avoid strikes in the future.
