Rivers State - The State Commissioner of Police appeared today before the National Human Rights Commission. He denied allegations leveled against him in a petition filed by Rotimi Amaechi, Rivers State Governor.
In the petition, Mr. Amaechi accuses Joseph Mbu of insubordination and violation of human rights. The Governor also claims the crime rate has risen in Rivers State, and that is because of Mr. Mbu's attitude.
The Governor asked the Commission to look into the matter and ascertain if Mr. Mbu is a suitable candidate to continue to head the police force in the state.
The Commission had since conducted a series of investigations and invited the Governor and the Commissioner to narrate their respective sides of the story.
Both parties were invited to appear before the Commission on October 18, 2013. However, only Governor Amaechi showed up, while Mr. Mbu honoured the invitation only on Thursday, December 5.
Addressing the press after the meeting that lasted several hours, Mr. Mbu denied allegations leveled against him. He insisted that, contrary to the belief that he had been ignoring Governor Amaechi, the two of them engaged in regular communication with Amaechi.
He also denied insinuations that he takes directives from President Goodluck Jonathan and the First Lady, Dame Patience Jonathan.
