Jonathan’s Extension Of Emergency Rule Disdainful – Nyako

Governor Murtala Nyako of Adamawa State, yesterday, rejected the renewed attempt by President Goodluck Jonathan to extend the six-month-old state of Emergency in the state, describing the action as unjustified and punitive.
The governor made his feelings known shortly after President Jonathan had sent in a new request to the National Assembly, pleading with the lawmakers to extend the emergency rule currently in operation in the three states of Yobe, Adamawa and Borno, by six more months.
According to Jonathan, the new request was borne out of the fact that “some security challenges still exist in a few parts.” The President did not however name the parts where insecurity still existed to warrant further application of emergency rule.
But Nyako in a statement made available to Vanguard last night, condemned the quest by Mr. President to prolong emergency rule in his state despite the fact the conditions that gave rise to the imposition in the first place did not arise in Adamawa.
The statement, which was signed by Nyako’s Director of Press and Public Affairs, Mr. Ahmed Sajoh, faulted the President for declaring a state of emergency in the state last year and asked the NASS to reject the request regarding Adamawa.
The governor said, “It is not far for a President to be so disdainful towards the welfare of his people, we condemn any attempt to extend emergency rule in Adamawa State. “As a government, we see the renewed bid for the imposition of a state of emergency in Adamawa as an affront on the people of the state and a negative reward for their endurance and cooperation so far.
“We call on the NASS to review the situation carefully and treat every state on its merit,” the governor said. Jonathan had relied on the provisions of section 305(6) (C) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria,1999, to seek the approval of the legislature for the extension of the emergency rule in the three states.
“As a result of the laudable efforts of our security agencies and the support of the citizens in the affected areas, we have achieved considerable successes in containing the activities of the terrorist elements. “However, some security challenges still exist in a few parts,” he said.
“In view of the foregoing, I most respectfully request the Distinguished Senate to consider and approve by resolution the extension of the proclamation of the state of emergency by a further period six months with effect from the 12th of November,2013,” Jonathan explained.
