The House of Representatives urged President Goodluck Jonathan to make a full use of the machineries available to his administration to tackle oil theft problem in Nigeria as the recent efforts proved to lack the required political goodwill to make it work.
This position was announced by the spokesman of the House, Hon Mohammed Zakari, during a journalist briefing at the National Assembly.
Zakari stated the President had failed to sanction persons and authorities who had not been able to secure oil installations despite receiving huge payments for such services.
“As per oil theft, leadership is not all about excuses. It is all about proffering solutions. I know that those that are involved in this unpatriotic act are not ghosts. They are human beings and government has the machinery to put it into goodwill and tackle oil bunkering," the spokesman said.
“We know that we have security operatives. Government has been empowered on that. There are budgetary provisions made for that," Zakari added.
He added, that the existing technology allows to enhance control over the oil theft as it allows to have a constant surveillance over the pipelines so that if there is a leakage or breakage, it will be detected immediately.
