The son of the late leader claims it’s his right to be national leader.
A Federal High Court, Lagos, on Monday fixed July 23 for the continuation of hearing in a leadership tussle suit filed by an elder of Cherubim and Seraphim Church.
In the suit filed in February 2009, Adepoju Arogundade is challenging the purported claim of the defendant, Adebola Adenuga, as the leader of the Cherubim and Seraphim Church in Nigeria.
On Monday, the court was scheduled to hear an application filed by the plaintiff but could not go on with the matter.
Justice Okechuku Okeke directed that a new date be assigned to the case and it was slated for July 23.
The plaintiff had averred in his statement of claim that after the death of his father, he was supposed to become the next leader of the church.
Mr. Arogundade stated that the church, which was founded in 1925 by Emmanuel Abiodun and registered in 1930, had a constitution which clearly spelt out the mode of leadership succession.
He said that after the death of any leader, the oldest in the church was to assume the position of leadership.
The plaintiff stated that instead of appointing him as the next rightful church leader in line with its constitution, the defendant was wrongly appointed.
Mr. Arogundade, therefore, urged the court to reinstate him as the rightful leader of the church.
At the last hearing date, the plaintiff’s counsel, Tunji Gomez, had expressed dissatisfaction at the slow pace at which the case was going.
He had told the court that frequent letters for adjournments by the defendant, were meant to delay the court proceedings.
Mr. Gomez, therefore, urged the court to ensure a quick disposal of the case.
