President Jonathan draws curtain on Police Games

New national and meet records have been set at the biennial Police Games going on in Port Harcourt with the 400 metres (women), 5000 metres (women) and the newly introduced Pole vault (women) witnessing new times.
The new record in 400m was set by Woman Police Corporal Comfort Ekanem of Zone 2 – Lagos, with a time of 53.56 seconds, shattering the old time record of 55.20 seconds set in 1990 Bauchi Police Games by Woman Sgt (now Superintendent of Police) Benedicta Itua.
In a similar vein, Mary Joseph of Zone 3 set a Games’ record of 20minutes, 43 seconds to erase the old 5000m record of 23minutes .33 seconds set by Mercy Edward of Zone 5, at “Eko 2008” in Lagos. Similarly, Mauren Williams of Zone 4 scaled a height of 2.80m, to set a new Games record in the newly introduced women pool vault.

Meanwhile, the over-all medals table released shows that Force Headquarters is still leading other twelve Zones with 21 gold, 18 silver and 16 bronze medals. FHQ is closely followed by Zone 2 – Lagos, with 20 gold, 18 silver and 18 bronze medals; while Zone 7 is third with 13 gold,14 silver and 19 bronze medals.
All competitive events are expected to be concluded on Thursday in all venues of the Games but the ceremonies continued yesterday at the Police Officers Mess, Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium, Agbani Darego Sports Complex, the Port Harcourt Polo Club and the Civic Centre.
The closing ceremony of the 10th Biennial Police Games comes up today at the Liberation Stadium, Port Harcourt with very colourful performances expected from the Nigeria Police Band, the Police Mobile Force, several musical groups including the popular Nigerian Pop star, “Faze” and “Oba Omega” who have been lined-up to entertain guests, officials and athletes.
The ceremony will be graced by President Goodluck Jonathan who is expected to formally declare the Games closed. Top political and government officials, including State governors, service chiefs, captains of industries and royal majesties are also expected at the closing ceremony.
